Canadian Booster Seat Law Requirements

Booster seat laws were recently enacted in New Brunswick. In British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador the rulles are set to change on July 1st. Sick Kids Canada produced a comprehensive chart summarizing booster seat and child seat requirements by province and territory. The excerpt below (click on it to see the full document) lists the requirements for the provinces that mandate booster seat usage. Of course, we believe all children should use appropriate child restraints in the car until they are big enough to pass the 5 step test, even if the law says they are old enough for adult seatbelts. Otherwise, it just isn’t safe.

Fatality Statistics

Following a slew of new child restraint laws in the past couple of months, we have observed a fair amount of skepticism regarding the necessity of booster seats. The NHTSA website has a number of informative studies, though you have to wade through quite a lot of statistics to find what you are looking for.

To keep things simple, we are posting just one graphic here today. From a 2005 report analyzing motor vehicle fatalities from 1998 to 2002, we have extracted the statistics on injuries among 8 to 15 year olds. This particular report does not distinguish between different types of restraints, and we will cover these in a future post. The chart below shows the relative risk of death for a number of different vehicles:

Conclusions: children tend to be safest in trucks as long as they are restrained. Unrestrained, passenger cars are the most likely to result in fatalities. Across all four categories of vehicles, children aged 8-15 are 50% less likely to die in an accident if restrained. Taking responsible steps to reduce the likelihood of fatalities is not being over-protective.

Booster Seat Requirements by State

Specific provisions vary widely from State to State. All laws include an age limit, but some States also emphasize weight limits, while others also stipulate height requirements.

NHTSA has a site filled with newly updated information on booster seat requirements. This particular chart is great for providing a clear visual overview. With so many different requirements, it’s no wonder parents are confused!

Celebs buzzing about olli

olli was an instant favorite among celebrities at the “Boom Boom Room: Wonderland” event. The Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles hosted the children’s movie-inspired gifting suite for parents and their kids.

The seat wasn’t just a hit with parents, kids liked it too. Ryan Newman, young Miley from “Hannah Montana,” stopped by to get comfortable in an olli. She told the clek team that she was the last of her friends to need a booster seat and was excited to have a more stylish option.

Bubblegum camo and leopard jackets were a top pick among the girls; boys dug the treehouse camo jacket.

Over 100 celebs turned out in support of Project Apple, a charity giving the gift of reading to children living in poverty.

The clek booster seat was in such high demand that many of the celebrities that came later had to be placed on a mailing list. Actor and comedian, Bill Bellamy said the olli was the best product at the event. Bellamy loves animal prints, taking home a pair of the leopard and zebra clek jackets, for his four-year-old daughter Bailey Ivory-Rose.

Singer Carnie Wilson picked up a booster for her daughter Lola. She’ll ride in style and safety.

Crash Test Video

This video footage shows the horrifying consequences when children are not correctly restrained in cars.

The video, produced by the British Automobile Association, shows a number of crash tests using dummies.

Each crash impact occurs at just 19mph.

Why adult seatbelts are not good enough for children

Researchers from the Sydney and NSW Universities recently set out to find out why [about 1000 Australian children are seriously injured in motor vehicle accidents each year, despite wearing seatbelts.] They trawled through past studies on seatbelts and child car crash injuries, and published their results in the Medical Journal of Australia.

They found that adult seatbelts were better than no seatbelt at all. But nonetheless children in adult seatbelts are on average about 2.7 times more likely to suffer an injury in a car accident than adults wearing the same type of seatbelt.

1. Does your child sit all the way back against the auto seat?
2. Do your child’s knees bend comfortably at the edge of the auto seat?
3. Is the lap belt below the tummy, touching the thighs?
4. Is the shoulder belt centered on the shoulder and chest?
5. Can your child stay seated like this for the whole trip?

If you answered no to any of these questions, your child needs a booster seat to ride safely in the car. Read more
