The stats are startling – motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death in the United States and Canada. That’s why excuses like “We’re only going to the grocery store,” or “She thinks she’s too old for a booster seat,” can make the difference between life and death, according to Safe Kids USA.

To make sure that your kids (under 13) are ready to graduate to safety belt-only protection in the car, you can perform this simple Safety Belt Fit Test.

Until then, make sure that you’re keeping children properly restrained while on the go. Visit www.magnaclek.com for full info on the safety features of the LATCH-able clek olli, recently rated for an increased weight limit of 120 lbs, and clek oobr, the first full back booster to use a magnesium back frame for the ultimate in lightweight protection.

Is your car prepared for winter weather? According to the National Safety Council, there are several factors to consider before heading out on a holiday road trip. Make sure that you’re in the know by heeding the council’s advice, which follows:

Prep your car for winter with an annual checkup that includes:

Checking the ignition, brakes, wiring, hoses and fan belts

Changing and adjusting the spark plugs

Checking the air, fuel and emission filters, and the PCV valve

Inspecting the distributor

Checking the battery

Checking the tires for air, sidewall wear and tread depth (tried the penny test?)

Checking the antifreeze level and the freeze line

Before hitting the road, be sure to pump a full tank of gas and freshen up on de-icer fluid. Just to be safe, you’ll also want to pack the following in your trunk: Spare tire with wheel wrench and tripod jack, shovel, jumper cables, tow chains, bag of salt (or kitty litter) for traction, tool kit, and a “survival kit.”

Your kit should contain all of the basics:

Flashlight and batteries

Reflective triangles

Compass

First aid kit

Exterior windshield cleaner

Ice scraper and snow brush

Wooden matches

Scissors and string

And lastly, non-perishable, high-energy foods like nuts, dried fruit and hard candies

“Are we there yet?” It’s the anthem for family holiday travel… And it’s about to begin.

When you’re packing up for a road trip to grandma’s or a winter weekend away, there are a few things to keep in mind. We’ve included some of our own favorite tips to keep you happy on the highway:

Plan ahead – AAA’s free TripTik planner allows you to map out a route that includes rest stops, restaurants, ATMs, and even gas stations.

Be prepared – Invest in a timely tune-up before hitting the road for longer trips. CarCare.org provides suggested pre-trip inspections.

Pack snacks – Make your own trail mix and divvy it up ahead of time in re-sealable bags for little hands.

Stay cool – Drink boxes are a road trip must-have. Keep ‘em in a small cooler with an ice pack.

Keep busy – Print out coloring pages at ColoringBookFun.com and pack crayons for a quiet activity, or include the whole family in the fun with Mom’s Minivan games.
